In the automotive industry, metal or plastic components are often fixed to larger body parts with screws and nuts. To check whether nuts and screws are present and in the correct position after the robot-controlled screwing process, a laser distance sensor triangulation is installed above the component. With its fine light spot, it checks whether the small nuts and screws have been correctly positioned and screwed in. Its high accuracy means that even the smallest, darkest and most reflective objects can be reliably detected against any background.

Copy Counting for Printed Products via Jump Detection with Triangulation Laser Distance Sensors
In the printing industry, newspapers and magazines are conveyed on conveyor belts in what is known as a shingle stream, i.e. overlapping. The copies must be counted so that the downstream packaging unit can process the exact quantity. Since they lie on top of each other and vary in thickness, detection must take place independently of the absolute distance to the sensor. A triangulation laser sensor mounted above the conveyor belt reliably detects the units thanks to the integrated jump detection function. In this operating mode, the sensor reacts to measured value jumps on the folds.

Detection of Thin Wafer Slices Laser Distance Sensors Triangulation in Production Systems
During the production of multi-layer cookies, individual wafer slices are transported on conveyor belts before they are coated with cream and processed into a stacked cookie. Laser distance sensor triangulation precisely detects the position of the wafer slices and thus controls the material flow of the system. Thanks to the integrated jump detection, the wafer-thin slices, just one millimeter high, can also be reliably detected on the slightly fluctuating conveyor belt. Even if the sensor is misaligned, it does not need to be re-taught in, as it reacts to the jump.

Welded nuts are used in car body construction, which are automatically welded to sheet metal parts to screw assemblies together. They are placed in a welding fixture on a mandrel before a robot positions and centers the body part. Before the nut is then welded to the sheet metal part with welding tongs, a laser distance sensor triangulation must check whether the nut is placed on the mandrel. Due to the large working range with high precision, the sensor can be mounted further away from the process to protect the sensor.

High-density fibreboards (HDF boards) with a thickness of just a few millimeters are used in furniture production. These are transported on conveyor belts and fed to the various processing steps. A laser distance sensor triangulation is mounted above the conveyor line to detect the thin boards precisely and position them. Thanks to the integrated jump detection, the sensors reliably detect the boards even if the conveyor belt is uneven. This ensures that the boards are precisely positioned and can be fed to the next processing step.
