In the metal industry, liquid aluminum is cast into so-called ingots – these are metal bars that are manufactured for further transport. During the production of these ingots, the liquid metal level must be continuously monitored. In reflow soldering, soldering paste is applied through the openings of a template to the intended contact surfaces of a PCB using a scraper. During this process, the height of the solder paste between the two scrapers must be continuously monitored. If the paste level drops below a defined threshold value, solder paste is automatically added. This ensures an even flow of material.

In the printing industry, newspapers and magazines are conveyed on conveyor belts in what is known as a shingle stream, i.e. overlapping. The copies must be counted so that the downstream packaging unit can process the exact quantity. To avoid disruptions in the production process, cans must be placed with the opening facing up during production and the filling process in high-performance transport systems. These sensors reliably monitor all conveyor lines simultaneously and check the correct position of the cans via distance and intensity measurements. Misalignments and empty transport sections are thus detected early and can be corrected in good time.

Portions of sausage and cheese cut by high-performance slicing machines must be precisely positioned and aligned on the conveyor belt so that they can be placed into the packages with exact accuracy. To precisely control the conveyor belt, laser distance sensors triangulation detect the leading edges of the portions at three points: after cutting, before layering and after joining. Thanks to the fine laser beam and the jump height detection, the sensors reliably detect the thin slices on the slightly oscillating conveyor belts. This enables exact timing.
