In the automotive industry, sheet metal parts are taken from a stock by a robot gripper and fed to the welding robot. Several sheets can stick together due to adherent oil, wedging of the sheets or magnetic charge. To ensure that only one sheet is gripped per assembly process, two laser distance sensors triangulation are mounted at opposite positions. The sensors measure the distance to the sheet and then calculate the sheet thickness via a difference calculation. If this result is greater than that of an individual sheet, a signal is output.

In the manufacture of passenger car tires, individual rubber tracks are overlapped in order to meet various requirements at different points in the tire. These overlaps are detected during operation at high speeds by two laser distance sensors triangulation using differential measurement. Distance Measurement of Battery Modules for Handling Processes Using Triangulation Laser Distance Sensors
During automated production of battery modules in the automotive industry, individual cells are stacked on top of each other to form multi-part units. Before robot arms can grip them, the exact distance to the module must be measured – accurate to a few tenths of a millimeter. After all, all linings must have an even thickness. For this purpose, two triangulation laser distance sensors are installed above a clamping device. A subsequent target/actual comparison indicates whether the values are within the tolerance, i.e. whether the brake lining can be approved for assembly.

In the electronics industry, PCBs are fixed and conveyed laterally in transport modules, which can lead to bending. In order for the solder robot to compensate for this bend and create the ideal distance between the plate and the solder head, the bending of the PCBs must be measured. A laser distance sensor triangulation is installed for this purpose, which measures several points on the board from below. The control system uses the measured values to create a profile. The sensor measures precisely despite different colors and shiny solder pads and thus enables a reliable soldering process.

Width Measurement of Parquet Floorboards in the Wood Industry Through Laser Distance Sensor Triangulation
Boards must be milled to the correct width when making parquet floors. The wood surfaces vary from light to dark and from shiny to matt. The nominal width must be maintained so that the boards can be laid cleanly. Two opposing laser distance sensors for triangulation measure the exact width without an analysis module or control unit – thanks to the integrated width measurement function. The measured value is transmitted via the analog output or via IO-Link. This allows deviations to be detected quickly and faulty boards to be ejected.
