Distance Measurement of Battery Modules for Handling Processes Using Triangulation Laser Distance Sensors

During automated production of battery modules in the automotive industry, individual cells are stacked on top of each other to form multi-part units. Before robot arms can grip them, the exact distance to the module must be measured – accurate to a few tenths of a millimeter. A triangulation laser distance sensor is installed on the gripper unit per module for this purpose, which precisely records the distance values despite the highly reflective battery surfaces and transmits them to the gripper.

The contactless laser triangulation sensors work according to the angle measurement principle, which enables reliable and highly precise measurement in the close range up to 1,000 mm. The triangulation sensors deliver stable measured values regardless of colors, shapes, rough and textured surfaces.
