Object and Distance Control of Cobots Using Ultrasonic Distance Sensors
Object and Distance Control of Cobots Using Ultrasonic Distance Sensors
In the packaging industry, collaborative robots take over the automatic gripping and transfer of cartons between pallets and conveyor systems. An ultrasonic sensor in miniature design is mounted directly on the gripper to reliably detect the distance to cardboard boxes and to be able to grip them precisely. The sensor detects objects and measures distances to workpieces or obstacles in the range of up to three meters, regardless of shape, color or changing light conditions. Thanks to its compact size and low weight, it has no influence on the dynamics of the robot.

Presence and Position Check of Labels for Hygiene Products with Ultrasonic Fork Sensor
Presence and Position Check of Labels for Hygiene Products with Ultrasonic Fork Sensor
When manufacturing care products, labels must be applied to the packaging at high speed. Before application, the labels are fed to products on transparent carrier materials. An ultrasonic fork sensor detects whether the labels have been correctly positioned on the carrier foil. These labels can be different colors, dark, transparent, printed and very thin. Between 120 and 160 labels are recorded per minute. This ensures that labels are applied quickly and without error.

Fill-Level Measurement of Disinfectant Bottles with Ultrasonic Distance Sensors with Sound Conduction Thanks to a Soundpipe
Fill-Level Measurement of Disinfectant Bottles with Ultrasonic Distance Sensors with Sound Conduction Thanks to a Soundpipe
In automated filling systems in the hygiene industry, bottles with disinfectant gel must be checked after filling to ensure that the correct filling level is present. For this purpose, an ultrasonic distance sensor is installed above the turntable with the individual plastic bottles. As the bottles have a narrow neck, the sensor requires sound conduction (soundpipe). This ensures that the sonic cone runs safely through the narrow opening. Thanks to ultrasound technology, colors, transparencies, reflection or degrees of gloss do not matter – all objects are reliably detected.

Counting of Objects in Automatic Deposit Return Machines with Ultrasonic Distance Sensor
Counting of Objects in Automatic Deposit Return Machines with Ultrasonic Distance Sensor
In deposit return machines, a check must be carried out to determine how many bottles, cans and containers have been inserted in order to control the capacity of the system. For this purpose, an ultrasonic distance sensor is installed above the belt, which detects in reflex mode the objects made of glass, aluminum or PET regardless of their shape, color, position, surface and size. The background is completely hidden from view. Thanks to the wide sonic cone, moving and jumping objects are also reliably detected with the dirt-resistant sensors.

Stack Height Monitoring on Packaging Magazines with Ultrasonic Distance Sensor
Stack Height Monitoring on Packaging Magazines with Ultrasonic Distance Sensor
Different colored cartons in packaging systems are stacked on top of each other in magazines before being unfolded and filled in downstream processes. In order to ensure a continuous material supply, the stacking height of the magazine is checked by an ultrasonic distance sensor. This sensor records the measured values either continuously via IO-Link or with two switching points so that the magazine can be refilled in good time. Thanks to the wide sonic cone, recesses, gaps or punches have no influence on object sensing.

Film Tear and Fill Level Monitoring in Packaging Systems with Ultrasonic Distance Sensor
Film Tear and Fill Level Monitoring in Packaging Systems with Ultrasonic Distance Sensor
Colorful, glossy or transparent films are used in packaging plants to ensure that products are airtight and securely packed. These are conveyed by rolls and attached around the objects. Ultrasonic distance sensors monitor the roll diameter to ensure continuous material flow. Two independent switching outputs signal when there is little film left on the roll and when the roll is empty and needs to be replaced. In addition, the sensor checks whether the film is open or torn.

Presence Check of Glass Bottles with Ultrasonic Sensor
Presence Check of Glass Bottles with Ultrasonic Sensor
Glass bottles of different shapes, colors and transparency are printed using digital inkjet printing in the beverage industry. Before the print heads start printing from different directions, it must first be checked that the bottles are present. This prevents the heads from spraying each other. For this purpose, the bottles are individually detected via ultrasonic sensors through an aperture on the neck of the bottle. When the presence of a bottle is confirmed, the print head is activated.

End Position Check of Panels in Buffer Storage with Ultrasonic Sensors
End Position Check of Panels in Buffer Storage with Ultrasonic Sensors
In the furniture industry, wood or plastic is processed in panels. Before processes such as sawing, they are temporarily stored in an automated buffer storage facility. Ultrasonic sensors are installed between the narrow conveyor rollers to detect the presence and end positions of the panels in the storage racks. In a compact 1K housing, the sensor detects objects precisely from close proximity even in dusty environments and with irregular surfaces, thus preventing multiple storage of panels. The sensors can be parameterized and process data read out via IO-Link before installation.

Fill Level Check by Ultrasonic Distance Sensors with IO-Link on Vibratory Bowl Feeders
Fill Level Check by Ultrasonic Distance Sensors with IO-Link on Vibratory Bowl Feeders
To reliably replenish the supply of screws, rivets or bolts in vibratory bowl feeders, the fill level must be constantly monitored. The vibration of the container separates the objects down a spiral chute and transports them away which depletes the supply in the feeder. The fill level is monitored by an ultrasonic distance sensor with IO-Link. This sensor delivers two digital switch signals regardless of the material. The switching points are set via IO-Link. The operator is therefore informed of the fill level at two stages: if the container is well filled or if it is almost empty. Related applications can be found here.

Ultrasonic Sensor Monitors Die-Cut Sheets and Foils for Chip Cards
Ultrasonic Sensor Monitors Die-Cut Sheets and Foils for Chip Cards
In the production of chip cards, PCB panels are printed and punched using a punching tool before they are stacked for packaging. Before transfer to a magazine, the sheets must be reliably detected in order to maintain a constant flow of material. Ultrasonic sensors ensure reliable detection of laminated, perforated and stamped sheets regardless of their color and surface – even transparent materials with numerous recesses are easily detected.

Presence Check of Wooden Panels in Furniture Production with Ultrasonic Distance Sensors
Presence Check of Wooden Panels in Furniture Production with Ultrasonic Distance Sensors
In the furniture industry, wooden panels with different colors, shapes, degrees of gloss and surfaces are conveyed on roller conveyor belts to the next process step. In order to monitor the transport fully automatically, the presence of the panels must be recorded at all times. The slim metric design allows installation beneath the conveyor technology in order to be able to carry out a precise presence check of the wooden panels. Even dust and chips do not influence the results of the ultrasonic sensors.

Presence Check of Steel Sheets on Roller Conveyors by Inductive Sensors with Increased Switching Distances
Presence Check of Steel Sheets on Roller Conveyors by Inductive Sensors with Increased Switching Distances
In the steel industry, the presence of steel plates before and after rolling or punching processes must be checked. For this purpose, the sheets are transported on roller conveyors and reliably detected at their outlet by an inductive sensor with increased switching distance. Height fluctuations of the sheet are compensated by the high switching distance. The sensor with integrated error indicator is ideal for harsh industrial environments thanks to its rugged M18 enclosure and IP67 degree of protection and can be mounted in a few simple steps.
