FAQs on Safety Technology

What does resolution mean for safety light curtains? What is the purpose of the OSSD output? How can you check if the safety distance on the machine is sufficient? This page answers frequently asked questions about safety technology.

The message “SEMG safety light curtain – no valid configuration” often indicates a missing or incorrect parameterization. Therefore, first check the device configuration to ensure successful initial startup.

Further information and the right solution can be found in the article from automation-inside: Why does my SEMG safety light curtain show “no valid configuration”?

Yes. The ZC7V003 adaptor cable (M12 × 1, 8-pin to M12 × 1, 5-pin) can be used to connect the receiver with a 5-pin connection cable.

With this connection variant, the safety light curtain is parameterized for safety operating mode without contactor monitoring. The reset button and the external contactors can be monitored via an external safety relay.

The wiring, parameterization and validation of the safety function must be carried out in accordance with the operating instructions and the required safety requirements.

The safety field height designates the area in which a standardized test object is reliably detected by the safety light curtain. This area can extend beyond the housing length.

For example, for the SEMG420 safety light curtain, the housing length is 1,512 mm, while the safety field height is 1,527 mm. The safety field is thus 15 mm larger in total and protrudes 7.5 mm beyond the device at both ends of the housing.

As a result, a 30 mm test rod penetrates 22.5 mm into the outermost light beam even at the edge and reliably triggers the contact-free electro-sensitive protective equipment (ESPE).

The muting box is connected to the expansion port of the receiver. This provides the inputs required for the muting function:

  • E1: Muting sensor 3, belt stop, full muting enable or cascading
  • E2: Muting sensor 4, muting enable or cascading
  • E3: Muting sensor 1
  • E4: Muting sensor 2
  • RES: Reset or override

The system connection is intended for the safety outputs OSSD1 and OSSD2, the voltage supply and other control and diagnosis functions.

The exact assignment and parameterization must be carried out in accordance with the operating instructions of the SEFG version used.

With the range setting, the emitting power of the safety light curtain can be adjusted to the actual distance between the emitter and receiver. Reduced transmission power limits the range of the light signal. This prevents neighboring safety light curtains from being affected – especially when several devices are installed in close proximity to each other.

The range should be set to ensure reliable communication between emitter and receiver.

The voltage inputs IN1 and IN2 are used for two-channel supply or enable of the safety outputs OSSD1 and OSSD2.

In a series connection, the OSSD signals from the previous guard locking device are routed to the IN1 and IN2 inputs of the following participant. If all connected safety devices are enabled, the signals are forwarded to the safety control system.

As soon as a participant requests the safe state, the two-channel signal chain is interrupted and the downstream safety evaluation is activated accordingly.

An application example is the SD4ICS01SE89electromagnetic guard locking device. It has two OSSD safety outputs and is suitable for series connection.

The resolution describes the smallest obstacle size that can be reliably detected at any point within the safety field. If an object of this size interrupts the safety field, the safety outputs switch to the safe state and trigger the intended switch-off command.

The required resolution depends on the respective application. Depending on whether fingers or hands are to be protected, for example, a safety light curtain with a suitable resolution is used.

An OSSD output is a safety-related switching output that connects electro-sensitive protective equipment to the downstream safety control system. OSSD stands for “output signal switching device”.

For example, if the safety field of a safety light curtain is interrupted or a safety-related fault is detected, the OSSD outputs switch to the OFF state. The safety control system evaluates this signal and initiates the intended safety reaction.

Safety sensors typically have two separate outputs – OSSD1 and OSSD2. Both channels must be evaluated independently of each other in terms of safety.

In the case of a safety through-beam sensor, signal acquisition takes place in a single channel between emitter, receiver and safety evaluation. The analysis module monitors this signal chain using a test signal and then provides two separate safety outputs – OSSD1 and OSSD2.

However, the two-channel further processing of the OSSD signals does not subsequently increase the performance level of the upstream, single-channel sensor architecture. The overall system consisting of a safety through-beam sensor and a suitable analysis module therefore achieves performance level c in accordance with EN ISO 13849-1.

The total reaction time of the safety system must first be determined for this. It consists of the response time of the electro-sensitive protective equipment, the response time of the safety control system and the machine over-travel time.

In practice, the over-travel time is determined directly on the machine using a suitable measuring device. The required safety distance can be calculated based on the measured value:

S = (K × T) + C

Note:

  • S: Required safety distance
  • K: Defined approach speed
  • T: Total system response time
  • C: Additional, application-dependent distance

The distance between the safety field and the danger zone must be at least equal to the calculated value. The most unfavorable measured over-travel time as well as the specifications of the risk assessment, the operating instructions and the applicable standards are key.
