Substitution Error

A substitution error means that one character is substituted with another valid character. This type of error is particularly critical as they frequently go unnoticed due to the fact that the incorrect character is a valid part of the code. The character is valid as far as scanning and evaluation are concerned, but it results in erroneous information. See also: Check Digit
