Collision Protection in High-Bay Shuttles with Long-Range Laser Distance Sensors

In automated high-bay warehouses, several shuttles are used simultaneously on defined routes to store and remove materials. In order to prevent collisions between the transport robots driving on the same route, the autonomous vehicles must orient themselves within the space. For this purpose, long-range laser distance sensors are installed on the front and rear of the vehicle housing, which proactively detect objects at great distances. The switching signals are evaluated in the control system so that the vehicles are braked in good time and collisions are prevented.

Long-range laser distance sensors work according to the principle of transit time measurement, which means that they cover large working ranges, so that objects can be reliably detected even at great distances. The emitted light can be switched off for these sensors, which eliminates temperature drift.
