LBD Diffuse Bar Lights

Not every test object in industrial image processing delivers a process-reliable camera image under direct illumination. Reflections and hotspots can make evaluation difficult. The LBD diffuse bar light creates homogeneous lighting conditions for glossy, uneven or low-contrast surfaces and makes relevant features such as edges, codes, structures and silhouettes visible.

Diffuse bar lights from the LBD series provide particularly even light distribution over the entire lighting surface. As a result, test objects are illuminated homogeneously and disturbing reflections in the camera image are reduced. The LBD is suitable for diffuse incident light applications, direct illumination at short working distances and as background illumination.

Reduced reflections – shiny or uneven surfaces become visible without distracting reflections.
Clear contrasts – structures, edges and features can be reliably detected.
High reproducibility – uniform illumination conditions enable stable and repeatable processes.

Illumination Methods with Diffuse Bar Lights

The LBD demonstrates the versatility of diffuse illumination. Depending on the arrangement, surfaces are illuminated evenly, features are highlighted with high contrast or object contours are displayed. Further illumination methods are explained in the descriptions of the individual products.

Brightfield
By using bar lights as incident light, direct illumination causes reflections on the surface of the object being examined.

Flat angle
Using bar lights at a flat angle enables a contrast to be created at the edges, which allows slight illumination of the surface.

Darkfield
Positioned as a flat aligned illumination, the bar light highlights edges strongly while hardly any light falls on the surface.

Backlighting
The illumination surface is so diffuse that it can be used as backlight to create homogeneous background illumination. This illumination can be used when the silhouette of an object needs to be examined.

Illumination Examples with the LBD Bar Light

The example images show typical illumination methods for bar lights. They were shot with two LBDW101 at a working distance of 220 mm and an exposure time of 1 ms.

In this example, the specified working distance describes the distance between the camera and the sample part.

Industrial Image Processing Applications

Checking the Seals

Special high-temperature seals are used in hydrogen fuel cells for the automotive industry. These must be checked very precisely for dimensional accuracy and damage during production. For this purpose, several machine vision cameras, in combination with telecentric lenses, are connected to a machine vision controller and positioned over an inspection table. Thanks to the high resolution of the camera and the homogeneous illumination by bar light, the inside and outside diameters are measured precisely and damage is reliably detected.

Robot-Guided Quality Inspection of Car Dashboards

When assembling car fittings, components must be checked for presence and position by a camera-based system. Bar lights installed on a cobot enable the camera to reliably detect curved areas as well as different materials and colors such as chrome or black in a single operation. Measuring 12.5 cm in length, the lights are short and light enough to be mounted directly on the robot. The diffused white light on both sides of the camera ensures homogeneous and soft illumination even at different distances.
