Fraying

Fraying is a problem associated with poor barcode label printing quality. Poor paper quality or inadequate printing techniques often lead to poor printing results. This frequently causes sloppy printing of the outside edges of the bars, i. e. fraying. Excessive fraying leads to scanning errors or illegibility of the barcode. Sloppy printed edges may also result from dirty barcode labels.
