In the food industry, barcodes and the best before date (BBD) on cans must be read reliably in-process. Sufficient illumination is required for a machine vision camera to reliably recognize the data. A small bar light installed on the side of the conveyor illuminates the entire scanning area, enabling reliable code and BBD reading on cans. Its small dimensions and IP67 degree of protection make the bar light suitable for use in confined spaces and harsh ambient conditions.

FFP3 masks must be monitored during the manufacturing process to ensure reliable function. During this process, it must be checked whether the integrated membranes are correctly inserted before the sealing caps are applied. The membrane must not protrude and must be flush with the frame. For this purpose, a vision system is installed which checks both the position and the diameter of the membrane. The system consists of a machine vision camera, an analysis module (control unit) and a ring light. If the tolerance is exceeded, the mask is rejected.

When filling different types of spreadable cheese, it must be ensured that the correct lid and logo are applied to each packaging. As the varieties are changed several times a day, there must be no confusion between the lid and the contents. Before PCBs are loaded in SMD systems, they must be placed in the correct position and fed into the system. For the position test, a vision system is installed above the PCBs, which records a crosshair printed on the circuit board as a reference point. From this, the so-called “offset” is determined and transferred to the machine control. In the subsequent assembly process, all components are applied in the correct position – thereby minimizing misplacement. The PCB is also uniquely identified by the vision system via decoding of a DataMatrix code.

Once beverage cans have been filled, labels are applied on the cans. The cans must be aligned in order to position the labels with millimeter precision. For this purpose, they are separated at high speed over a conveyor belt and turned in a jaw clamping system. A side-mounted vision system consisting of a machine vision camera, lens, ring light and analysis module records several images of the can per second and thus identifies features such as 1D codes or printed patterns. If these are detected and thus the position of the can is detected, the label application is triggered.

Before the caps are finally applied to the bottles, a vision system consisting of machine vision cameras, machine vision controllers, software and illumination reliably checks the inside and outside of the caps in several steps. The inspection includes the measurement of diameter, ovality and height, as well as the presence, absence of defects and subsequently the correct seating of the cap. Faulty closures are sorted out immediately.
