In the production of metal profiles, the presence and dimensions of the objects must be detected before a clamping device secures them in place. Profiles can be black, white, chrome, glossy or matt. Glass fiber optic light curtains based on the transmitter-receiver principle are used in confined spaces, together with a universal reflex sensor. The optical fibers are arranged in a single line to create a light band. The width is measured, the linear signal is output proportional to the glass fiber cover and the correct position is determined.

In the pharmaceutical industry, pills and tablets are packaged in blister packs to protect them from environmental influences, atmospheric oxygen or moisture. The packaging consists of foils that are unwound from the rolls during the production process. The end of the foil is marked with a marking adhesive strip. To ensure a continuous flow of material, contrast sensors detect this marking and can thus initiate a roll change. Thanks to the integrated jump detection, markings of different colors on different materials are reliably detected.

The IO-Link and the integrated display also enable the quality of the mark to be continuously monitored and the filling process optimally supported.

Continuous material supply must be ensured in punching machines. As a material buffer, the supplied metal sheets are guided through the system in the form of a hanging loop. This compensates for the time delay between replenishment and the production processes. To monitor this process, an ultrasonic distance sensor is installed above the loop. It checks whether the sag falls below the minimum value or touches the ground. Ultrasonic measurement is not affected by even very shiny plates and dirt such as oil mist or dust.

In the furniture industry, wood or plastic is processed in panels. Before processes such as sawing, they are temporarily stored in an automated buffer storage facility. Ultrasonic sensors are installed between the narrow conveyor rollers to detect the presence and end positions of the panels in the storage racks. In a compact 1K housing, the sensor detects objects precisely from close proximity even in dusty environments and with irregular surfaces, thus preventing multiple storage of panels. The sensors can be parameterized and process data read out via IO-Link before installation.

When manufacturing parquet flooring with tongues, it is important to ensure that the tongue is securely inserted into the groove in the parquet once pressed in. This is precisely monitored via laser distance sensors triangulation. Ideal for the wood industry: The sensors also work reliably in the event of flying chips and soiling. Since different parquet heights are produced on a single system, the respective distance to the background is detected via an analog output on the sensor. The sensors measure all relevant heights with their analog output: the distance to the conveyor belt, to the spring and to parquet.

After being handed in at the airport luggage check-in counter, suitcases and bags are placed in plastic trays for further transport and transported via conveyor technology. This makes handling and identification of the objects easier. Before the suitcases are placed in the containers, it is important to ensure that the trays are properly emptied. To do this, a robot gripper turns the tray over. The laser distance sensor time-of-flight installed above it measures the distance to the underside of the objects. In the beverage industry, aluminum hygiene seals are often applied to plastic bottles before the end cap is screwed on. Once the aluminum caps have been applied, their presence must be checked. For this purpose, an inductive sensor with full-metal housing is installed directly on the dispenser, which detects the seals. Thanks to the hygienic stainless steel 316L and the high IP69K degree of protection, the sensor is resistant to high pressure and cleaning agents, making it ideal for the beverage industry.

Door Positioning in Car Body Construction with 2D/3D Profile Sensors
In order to be able to precisely apply rubber seals for car doors, the position of the doors must be measured exactly in car body construction. For this purpose, three 2D/3D profile sensors per cell are installed on robots, which measure the doors supplied via overhead conveyor with micrometer precision. Thanks to the precise position determination, the doors can be precisely gripped and the seals positioned. Another profile sensor then checks the position of the seal.

Fill-Level Measurement in Mincers with Ultrasonic Sensor in Hygienic Design
Mincers are used in industrial production and portioning of minced meat. The fill level of the minced meat must be monitored to enable continuous filling. For this purpose, an ultrasonic distance sensor in a stainless steel housing (degree of protection IP69K) is installed above the feed container. If the level falls below the minimum fill level of the container, automatic feed of the mass is triggered. Thanks to its hygienic design, the sensor withstands even intensive cleaning under high pressure, at high temperatures of up to 80 °C and with aggressive cleaning agents.

1D Code
A 1D code, also known as barcode or one-dimensional code, is a code whose optical aquisition is made in an unidimensional way.

A 1D/2D scanner is a scanner that can read and process both 1D codes (1D code) and 2D codes (2D code).

2D Code
A 2D code, also known as a two-dimensional code, consists of a pattern of dark and light elements (bars, rectangles and squares with corresponding spaces in between) which are arranged in a 2D fashion. 2D codes have a more complex layout than 1D codes, and the technology required for acquiring and deciphering them is more complex as well as the scanner must always read the entire pattern depicted by the barcode in order to acquire and decipher 2D codes, and not just a horizontal line as is the case with 1D Codes. Two-dimensional codes contain more diverse information than one-dimensional codes, for example information for the identification of products, texts such as addresses, and delivery note numbers. In general, we differentiate within the 2D codes between the stacked codes (stacked code) and the matrix codes (DataMatrix code).

2D Code Scanner
A 2D code scanner is a scanner which operates according to the principle of an image processing system. It is equipped with a CCD or a CMOS element plus an integrated illumination and scans (scanning) a defined surface area depending on the selected scanning range. Thus, it is capable of reading 1D and 2D codes omnidirectionally.

3-A SSI
3-A SSI is an organization which sets standards in the field of food and beverages in close cooperation with the FDA. It is comparable with the EHEDG in Europe. Components in closed processes (e. g. piping) can be certified by 3-A SSI. Certified components bear the 3-A logo. Components in open processes (e. g. conveyor belts) cannot be certified.

3-Stage Enabling Switch
3-stage enabling switches (enabling switch), in comparison to 2-stage enabling switches, have the advantage of always ensuring safe shutdown in emergency situations regardless of individual user operation (release or pressing – in the event of a cramp). Mode of operation of a 3-stage enabling switch:

3D Tracking
3D tracking is the sum of rotary tracking or translatory tracking plus auto-focus. Objects are tracked with regard to the X and Y positions and are reliably detected by auto-focus at various working distances.

6-Band Multispectral Sensor
In a 6-bank multispectral sensor, the spectrum of visible light is broken down into six ranges including red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet (ROYGBV color space). This makes it possible to detect extremely fine color nuances thanks to spectral measurement.

Absolute Pressure
Absolute pressure is pressure relative to zero pressure in an empty space (vacuum). Example: Atmospheric pressure (ambient pressure / air pressure) has an absolute value of approximately 1 bar and a relative value of 0 bar.

Absorption
Absorption is a process in which the radiant energy of a light beam passing through a medium is partly or fully converted into another form of energy, e.g. heat.
