In the printing industry, printed products are conveyed via sheet-fed application machines. In order to reliably detect the front edges, a PNG//smart reflex light barrier with teach-in can be fitted above the conveyor belt on a moving background. The moving conveyor belt is used as a reference background and objects with a difference in contrast or height to the conveyor belt are detected. Alternatively, teach-in on a stationary background between the conveyor belts is also possible. This means that reflectors that would regularly become dirty due to paper dust can be dispensed with. Differential Measurement for Rubber Tracks via Laser Distance Sensors Triangulation
In the manufacture of passenger car tires, individual rubber tracks are overlapped in order to meet various requirements at different points in the tire. These overlaps are detected during operation at high speeds by two laser distance sensors triangulation using differential measurement. Reliable measurement is possible even on dark, light-absorbing surfaces. The sensors can be connected to each other via Plug&Play via the smart ZC4G004 connection cable. Without an additional analysis module, the sensors calculate the differential value independently and output it via the analog output and via IO-Link. Setup is easy via Bluetooth and the measurement results can be read directly on the display.

In the food and packaging industry, the use by date labels on food must be reliably verified. Batches without this information are rejected, which is extremely costly. To check the best before date label, a B60 smart camera with dome light 90° is mounted above the conveyor line perpendicular to the packaging. It checks whether the correct best before date is present with the OCR module at belt speeds of more than one meter per second. The position of the label can vary slightly.

The capacity of these collection points is monitored by retro-reflex sensors for transparent objects. If the number of available spaces exceeds a defined limit, the sensor triggers a signal. The integrated polarization filter for clear glass detection reliably detects even the highly glossy, chrome-plated and reflective surfaces of the battery cells.

For the production of trunk trims, fabric panels are pressed in automated robot cells, so-called rear body cells. After being picked up by the robot, the exact position of the deep black fabric is checked by four reflex sensors with background suppression. The miniature sensors in the 1K housing can be optimally integrated into the metal profiles of the gripping device and reliably detect the black fabric. Trunk trims for the automotive industry are automatically pressed in rear body cells. The deep black fabric is placed on a metal plate via an airlock, where it is automatically picked up by robots. The presence and exact positioning is checked by four reflex sensors with background suppression embedded in the plate to save space. Two B60 smart cameras with integrated image processing software are mounted above the conveyor belt for this purpose. If the sensor detects a pane, it is stopped by a gripper unit. The smart camera checks the presence and quality of the applied label. The position of the applied label can vary slightly. If the smart camera identifies a defect, a signal is output to trigger the ejection process.

After the labels have been affixed to liquid containers, the presence and position of the stickers must be checked for each object. A smart camera with integrated image processing software mounted on the side of the conveyor belt records the edges of the containers and labels during the process. The camera can be installed and aligned easily and intuitively thanks to the integrated visual field marking. The pattern matching software module also checks the label contour, thus checking each label for correctness.

After the manufacturing process, grated cheese is transported to the packaging station via a conveyor belt. These cameras check the falling cheese for possible foreign substances. If blue plastic is detected, a pneumatic tray (chute) opens to remove the contaminated cheese. After cookies are made in the food industry, they must be separated, sorted and portioned before packaging. The presence of the biscuit stacks must be checked in the fully automated packaging machines. Mounted above the conveyor line, two compact reflex sensors with background suppression detect the irregular surfaces of the biscuits at high speed, switching frequencies of up to 1,000 Hz and regardless of the background condition. The sensors can be easily adjusted thanks to the visible red light.

Technical Glossary
Aperture
Image Processing and Smart Cameras: An aperture is a circular opening within the lens which determines the amount of incident light. A high f-stop number indicates a small aperture, which means that only a small amount of light is allowed to pass into the camera, and the depth of focus is increased. Photoelectronic Sensors: An aperture is a mechanical component positioned in front of the sensor’s emitter or receiver by means of which the diameter of the light beam can be changed.

Depth of Focus
Image Processing and Smart Cameras: The depth of focus specifies ranges in front of and behind the object which are still imaged with adequately sharp focus. Depth of focus can be influenced by changing aperture, focal distance and the distance from the camera to the object.

Encoder
An encoder translates a detected route into an electrical signal. 2D/3D sensors: With an encoder, multiple individual profiles can be compiled to create a geometrically correct point cloud irrespective of the conveying speed. Image processing and smart cameras: With an encoder, a smart camera can take images or switch outputs in a defined position irrespective of the conveying speed.

Filter Function
Image Processing, Smart Cameras: A filter function is a process which enhances the image. Thus, unnecessary information of an image is blanked and the relevant image information is intensified. Photoelectronic Sensors, Ultrasonic Sensors: A filter function is a procedure for the suppression of interfering signals. Thus, unrequested signals are suppressed.

Resolution
Image Processing, Smart Cameras: The resolution specifies the mumber of pixels (pixel) specified as horizontal × vertical. 1D/2D and Barcode Scanners: The resolution of a scanner specifies the minimum readable module width. Image Processing and Smart Cameras: The visual field is the entire area which is captured by the camera. Barcode Scanner and 2D Code Scanner: The visual field is the active area where a 2D code scanner is able to read a barcode. The reading area is specified in x- and y-dimensions.
