Screw Depth and Position Control via Long-Range Laser Distance Sensors in Positioning Systems

Positioning systems are used to monitor the assembly process when screwing components onto engine blocks. These specify both the position and the screw depth in the X, Y and Z directions for the worker. This ensures that the screwing sequence is checked and prevents incorrect installation. Long-range laser distance sensors with PROFINET measure the distances of the three mobile axes and transmit the data to the handling system. Power is supplied via Industrial Ethernet thanks to the midspan adapter. Only when all positions are correct is the tool released for assembly.

Long-range laser distance sensors work according to the principle of transit time measurement, which means that they cover large working ranges, so that objects can be reliably detected even at great distances. The emitted light can be switched off for these sensors, which eliminates temperature drift.
