Collision Protection of Overhead Tracks with Long-Range Laser Distance Sensors in the Automotive Industry

In the car’s final assembly stage, car bodies must be transported along overhead tracks into inaccessible levels and to processing stations. The electric overhead conveyors required for this purpose are mounted under the hall ceiling so that the floor remains unobstructed. In order to avoid collisions, long-range laser distance sensors with wintec are installed on the overhead track carriers. They measure the distance to the carriers in front and thus control the distance between them. Collision-free operation is possible thanks to the range of ten meters and the ability to detect different surfaces at large angles.

Long-range laser distance sensors work according to the principle of transit time measurement, which means that they cover large working ranges, so that objects can be reliably detected even at great distances. The emitted light can be switched off for these sensors, which eliminates temperature drift.
