Highly Precise Counting: weCat3D Checks Bread Products

In order to be able to enjoy high-quality, fresh bread products every day, precise quality inspection during production is imperative. Swiss wholesale bakery JOWA AG depends on the expertise of wenglorMEL’s 2D/3D sensors to count up to 260,000 rolls per day. In order to be able to obtain exact production numbers, the Migros subsidiary has to detect and count numerous different types of bread products after the freezing process on a conveyor belt with the weCat3D MLWL254 profile sensor at their new location in Gränichen.

Decisive prerequisites include maximum accuracy, perfect integration into the process control system (PLC) and complete coverage of the conveyor belt. Up to 16,560 products per hour are recognized with 99.9% counting accuracy in random orientation – even sideways or upside-down. Unequivocal identification of the baked goods is implemented by means of a 3D point cloud which is converted into numeric counting values by the downstream BB1C004 analysis module. Bread type selection, counting values and counting time functions are configured via a central Ethernet interface (TCP/IP) and can be controlled directly via a touchscreen at the system. After the baked goods have been counted, they’re packaged and prepared for shipping. “High counting accuracy is decisive for this process and is provided by our 2D/3D sensors thanks to a resolution of up to 12 million measuring points per second”, explains Patrick Schröder, member of the wenglor support team. “In combination with intelligent communication capabilities via Ethernet, the weCat3D sensor is ideally suited for implementing this application."
