Screw Depth and Position Control via Time-of-Flight Laser Distance Sensors in Positioning Systems

Positioning systems are used to monitor the assembly process when screwing components onto engine blocks. These specify both the position and the screw depth in the X, Y and Z directions for the worker. This ensures that the screwing sequence is checked and prevents incorrect installation. Time-of-flight laser distance sensors with PROFINET measure the distances of the three mobile axes and transmit the data to the handling system. Power is supplied via Industrial Ethernet thanks to the midspan adapter. Only when all positions are correct is the tool released for assembly.

Laser Distance Sensors Time of Flight

Laser distance sensors Time-of-Flight (ToF) work according to the principle of transit time measurement, which means that they cover large working ranges up to 10,000 mm, so that objects can be reliably detected even at great distances. The ToF sensors are extremely robust against interfering ambient light, which ensures reliable operation.
